Frequently asked questions on AMSD EasyTalk™ 2.2 RC

  • AMSD EasyTalk™ can’t detect the sound card during installation.
Check if the sound card drivers are installed. Before AMSD EasyTalk™ installation try to close all applications that use the sound card. Your driver may be installed incorrectly or get out of date; try downloading a newer version and install it over the old one. Check the functioning of the sound card, its mixer and audio codecs by running Sound Recorder program from the standard Windows pack.
  • The remote subscriber can’t hear me though AMSD EasyTalk™ reports that sound connection has been established.
Press the QOS button («Connection quality»). If the field «Send» of the «Local Traffic» area shows zero sent data, then you may have not turned on your microphone or set incorrect mixer options for playback mode. If the field «Receive» of the «Remote Traffic» area shows non-zero received data, then the remote subscriber may have turned the loud speakers (headphones) on or set incorrect mixer options for playback mode.
  • I can't hear the remote subscriber though AMSD EasyTalk™ reports that sound connection has been established.
Press the QOS button («Connection quality»). If the field «Receive» of the «Local Traffic» area shows non-zero received data, then you might not have turned your loud speakers (headphones) on, or you set incorrect mixer options for playback mode. If the field «Send» of the «Remote Traffic» area shows zero sent data, then the remote subscriber might not have turned on the microphone or set incorrect options in the mixer for playback mode.
  • Can I talk in full duplex?
Some sound cards do not support this feature. In this case you should replace sound card. However, if your sound card supports full duplex, check if your sound driver supports it. If the existing driver cannot be set to full duplex support, try downloading a newer version of the driver supporting full duplex at the site of your sound card developers and install it over the old one.
  • AMSD EasyTalk Explorer™ can't connect to the directory server.
Check if you have specified the address and port properly. Port 2200 is used by default. If you specify address and port correctly but fail to connect to the directory server, please contact AMSD support service to check whether the required address and port have been changed. One of the possible causes may be incomplete EasyTalk installation. Try to Uninstall the program and install it again.
  • Can't read the text in the chat window (text dialog).
AMSD EasyTalk™ attempts to use the same font the remote subscriber does. If the font is not installed at your computer, this problem may occur. Change the font of the text output area using the text window menu.
  • I am speaking in half duplex. The remote subscriber can't say anything to me because his microphone icon is always gray and his speakers’ icon is green.
Sensitivity of your microphone is set incorrectly. Your microphone is very noisy and this noise is identified as your speech. Please decrease the sensitivity of your microphone.
  • I am speaking in half duplex. I can't say anything to the remote subscriber because my microphone icon is always gray and my speakers’ icon is green.
Sensitivity of the remote subscriber's microphone is set incorrectly. His microphone is very noisy and this noise is identified as his speech. He needs to decrease the sensitivity of his microphone.
  • Only separate words or scraps of speech are heard.
The following reasons are possible:
  1. The sensitivity of your or the remote subscriber's microphone is set incorrectly. The parts of words pronounced in a low voice are identified as noise and not transmitted. You need to increase the sensitivity of the microphone.
  2. Your Internet channel provides generally lower speed of transmitting or receiving UDP packages than it's necessary for your or the remote subscriber's program now. Check this by pressing the QOS button (“Quality connection UPD”). In the “Data Receipt Rate” area the speed value in the "Requirements" field may be higher than the speed value in the «Average» field. In this case try to continue your conversation as the program will automatically switch over to codecs requiring hower speed rates of data transmitting or data receiving.
  3. If the speech quality isn't improving gradually, try to switch over to half duplex mode by press the button «Full Duplex» back.
  4. Try to disconnect from the remote subscriber and call him again (or let him call you).
  5. Try not to use other Internet programs during the conversation as they may overload the channel.
  6. Try not to send files to the remote subscriber.
  7. If you connect to Internet in dial-up mode you need to disconnect from your ISP and try to reconnect (or connect to another provider). The problems may happen due to bad connection established.
  • The transmission quality is good, but long delays of the remote subscriber's answers occur. Why?
Unfortunately, your Internet channel (data transmission route) includes servers which do not provide the necessary speed of data transmission for real time conversation. Check it by entering:
tracert <IP-àäðåñ Âàøåãî ñîáåñåäíèêà>
from the console (MS DOS window). You might find out essential data delays and see their causes. Unfortunately, at present no VoIP provider can guarantee stable route-independent delays.
  • I live behind a firewall or MS Proxy Server. Should I set any settings?
If you work in a local area network and use security systems like a firewall with restricted access rights, then you should provide certain settings in AMSD EasyTalk Internet-phone on your computer and in the security system on the server. First of all contact your system administrator using the following information. If you have a firewall that allows access to Internet through a definite range of ports, then it's necessary to set this range on your computer and at the same time make the corresponding settings at the firewall. For that, go to «View» – «Options» -«Connection» menu and set «Use range of ports for working:». The recommended range of port numbers is [2300, 2400] for TCP protocols and [2600, 2700] for UDP. If your firewall does not allow subranging, use your Microsoft Proxy Server (if it is installed). Make the corresponding settings on Microsoft Proxy Server and at your workstation using Microsoft Proxy Client. The ports range should be the same. If it’s impossible to perform any of the recommended procedures, then, unfortunately, you will be able to use AMSD EasyTalk™ only within your local network.

Note: Access to TCP port 2200 is required to connect to our switchboard (AMSD DirectoryServer™).

  • I live behind a WinGate. Should I set any settings?
Please refer to this page. You will probably get detailed information about settings for Wingate 2.* there. Pay special attention to Wingate UDP service, as UDP protocol is used to create sound connection. Also read the preceding answer.
  • How can I call a regular Moscow phone?
Only users who have bought AMSD EasyTalk™ can call to Moscow. This service is not provided for shareware (trial) version users. Please refer to AMSD EasyTalk™ Help for the telephone call rules.
  • Can I call a city phone in any other city?
Not today; but this feature will be available in the future. A special phone server (gateway) should function in the region you want to call to (or near). Such a gateway is a software/hardware complex based on a computer. Its basic function should be speech digitization, sound packets transfer via Internet and speech reconstruction back from digital stream.
  • On attempt to call to a regular phone the program reports “Can't connect to remote host”.
First, only users who have bought AMSD EasyTalk™ can use this feature today. If you are sure your version is commercial, try to call again another time or another day; the directory server might have been down at that time. Please report the failure to product support service.
  • During call to a regular phone AMSD EasyTalk™ reports that “Remote user has not at least one audio codec matched with codecs installed in you system”.
Go to ControlPanel -> Multimedia and check installed audio codecs (audio compression programs). AMSD TalkServer™ requires GSM 6.10; if one is not present install it from the system CD. If the codec is present but marked as "Do-Not-Use", unmark it. If it the codec is present in the system but you can't find it in the View->Options->Sound menu (check if the «Local network» option is set), change its priority in the Control Panel -> Multimedia folder.
  • Which ISP connection bitrate is preferable for AMSD EasyTalk™?
To provide good quality of real time speech transmission without appreciable delays, it is desirable to have an Internet connection of at least 28.800 Kbps in case there is no data loss during transmission by UDP protocol. AMSD EasyTalk™ provides reasonable quality of speech transmission even at 30% UDP packages loss when the data exchange speed is up to 4.8 Kbps.
